The use of ultrasound waves for therapeutic purposes is extremely common in chiropractic practice. In fact, therapeutic ultrasound is one of the most widely used of all the passive modalities and is used to treat a variety of disorders ranging from pain and inflammation to bursitis and bone spurs. Although ultrasound is used frequently, it's the least understood and most frequently abused modality.
Ultrasound energy causes vibration that creates friction between the molecules of your tissues and mechanical sonic energy is converted into thermal energy, which results and heating of the deeper tissues. Ultrasound waves have an affinity for tissues such as tendons and ligaments
Physiologic reaction to therapeutic ultrasound
Therapeutic ultrasound is generally considered to be a form of deep heat. As such, the reaction of the tissues to ultrasound is simular to that for any other form of deep-heating modality. However, in addition to its heating effects, ultrasound also produces several non-thermal effects, such as:
1. Chemical reactions - ultrasound vibration stimulate the rate of chemical activity in the tissues, much like shaking a test tube in a laboratory.
2. Biologic reactions - ultrasound alters the permeability of the cell membrane, thereby enhancing the transfer of fluids and nutrients to the cells. There is some evidence that ultrasound may increase the rate of healing of certain injuries, which it is postulated may occur through this biologic response.
